A new sundae shop at 2414 Devine Street planned free sundaes for the first 50 guests at its Oct. 23 grand opening. Over on Rosewood Drive, the roadside ice cream window that has been serving Columbia since 1942 has stopped ordering new product.
Both of those things are true in Shandon this week, and they hint at something bigger about this fall. The corridor along Devine Street and the nearby edges of Rosewood and Five Points is handing off from businesses that served several generations to businesses that opened in the past few weeks. For a short window, from now until Rosewood Dairy Bar's tentative closing at the end of November, the old guard and the newcomers are all open at the same time. Brittons stays open after that, through Christmas Eve. The neighborhood's own fall calendar runs right through that overlap.
Two long goodbyes on the calendar
Brittons of Columbia at 2818 Devine Street is in what its owners call its "final season." The State reported that Stacy Levinson and Perry Lancaster, the married couple who have long run the shop, announced on Labor Day that the store will close after 80 years. Their post said it would be "business as usual" through Dec. 24. The Post and Courier also reported the closing as coming at the end of 2026. In the words of the farewell post quoted by The State, the shop dressed customers for "first jobs and first suits, graduations, weddings, celebrations, Sunday best, and final goodbyes."
Rosewood Dairy Bar at 3003 Rosewood Drive has a shorter and less certain timeline. As The State reported, the walk-up stand has been open since 1942 and has belonged to the Austin family for about three decades. It plans to sell its remaining product "for as long as possible," and its tentative timeline is to be "permanently closed by the end of November." No exact final day has been set. The business also said it may start a food truck, so its social media pages are the place to check.
If you are planning a final order, The State's coverage includes a piece of local lore. The Connor Shaw shake, named for the former University of South Carolina quarterback, is chocolate with peanut butter and fudge.
Between them, these two businesses have more than 160 years in business. They also close on very different schedules. The dairy bar could be gone before Thanksgiving, while Brittons stays open through the holiday shopping season.
New tenants in familiar rooms
Several of the newcomers have moved into buildings that already meant something to the neighborhood.
Bang Back Bar & Grill opened on Oct. 1 at 2719 Rosewood Drive, in the brick building at Rosewood and Howard Street. For more than 40 years that building was home to the Rockaway Athletic Club, which closed in 2024. It is the second Columbia location from owner Frederick Richardson, who also runs Bang Back Pinball Lounge on Saluda Avenue in Five Points. The new spot pairs a full bar and restaurant with pinball and arcade games. In The State's opening coverage, Richardson described the location as "dead center" between Rosewood, Shandon and the University of South Carolina. "More than anything, to me, it is a community center," he said.
QDOBA Mexican Eats has taken the former Kairos space at 4600 Devine Street, Suite A. The State reported a planned opening date of Oct. 20. The company's location page now lists daily hours, delivery and online ordering for the address.
Barron's Outfitters shows the handoff from the other side. After nearly 80 years on Harden Street, the store has moved to 2927 Millwood Avenue, according to Cola Daily's business listings. Some longtime businesses are closing, and at least one is staying open by changing its address.
The new arrivals on Devine
The brand-new businesses lean toward small, specialty retail and treats, the kind of shops that fill out an evening stroll.
Petite Party Shop at 3215 Devine Street is an offshoot of Alexandra Madison Weddings. It sells party goods, gifts and paper goods, and it has a Bon Bon Bar stocked with sweets and Swedish candy, as Cola Daily reported. The City of Columbia scheduled its grand opening for Sept. 17.
Monarch Paper Company at 2900 Devine Street, Suite B, held its ribbon cutting on Oct. 2. WIS covered the celebration. It opened just in time for holiday cards and gift wrap, a few blocks from where Brittons is winding down.
The Scoop N Scootery at 2414 Devine Street describes itself as a shop for "fully loaded, over-the-top ice cream sundaes" with a late-night atmosphere. The City's revised release set its grand-opening celebration for Friday, Oct. 23, at 2 p.m., with District 3 Councilman Will Brennan and Devine Street Association board member Kellan Monroe on the guest list. It arrived just as Rosewood Dairy Bar announced its plans to close. That timing is coincidence, but it means the neighborhood keeps a sundae counter close by.

The overlap, by date
Most of the neighborhood's November events fall before the dairy bar's tentative end-of-month closing, so the calendar works as a schedule for visiting the old and the new.
| Date | Event | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Sun., Nov. 8, noon to 8 p.m. | JerryFest, Five Points | Free live music, vendors, food trucks and children's activities; moved from its usual early-October date after a weather postponement |
| Mon., Nov. 9, 6:15 p.m. | Shandon Neighborhood Council meeting | St. John's Episcopal Church, 2827 Wheat St. |
| Thu., Nov. 12, 5 to 8 p.m. | Devine Night Out | Holiday shopping stroll with Santa photos and a community tree lighting |

| Fri., Nov. 27, 10 a.m. | Shandon Turkey Trot and Burn 5K | Starts and finishes near Devine Street Craft and Draft |
Devine Night Out on Nov. 12 is the night when this season's handoff is easiest to see. COLAtoday's Oct. 16 newsletter describes the annual event as a holiday shopping stroll along Devine Street, with photos with Santa and a community tree lighting. In one evening on one street, you could walk from Brittons' last holiday season to a paper shop that opened in October to a sundae counter that is barely a month old.
The Turkey Trot and Burn 5K brings the season back to the neighborhood's own streets. The Shandon Neighborhood Council dates the race to 1981. Since 2019 it has been a 5K starting at 10 a.m. on Black Friday, now on a USA Track and Field certified course through Shandon that is managed by GRIT Endurance LLC. Awards are presented at Craft and Draft, and there are prizes for the most creative costumes. Depending on when the dairy bar's final day falls, the morning of the race may come just after it closes and nearly a month before Brittons does.
What comes after the overlap
The next big change on Devine is further out. Sprouts Farmers Market has been announced as the anchor tenant for Devine Crossing at 3818 Devine Street, with an opening expected in 2027, according to The State. A May 2026 announcement in Shopping Center Business describes roughly 10,000 square feet of inline retail plus 5,000 square feet of multi-tenant space at the project, with no other tenants named so far. The 2027 date is still a projection.
For now, the clearest dates are the ones already set. Rosewood Dairy Bar is tentatively open until the end of November, Devine Night Out is Nov. 12, the Turkey Trot is Nov. 27, and Brittons is open through Dec. 24.
